The last official sighting of an ivory-billed woodpecker was in 1944, deep in a Louisiana swamp. Some still hold out hope that the majestic bird Audubon called "the great cheiftan of the woodpeckers" still survives. This male is drawn in ballpoint and earth pigments on an original 1934 envelope.
