Blue jays are corvids - the geniuses of the bird world - and they are brilliant mimics. Years ago, a rescued jay who lived in my kitchen would wait until I went upstairs, make the exact sound of my phone ringing, and watch me come running. I think of him when I draw jays.
This clever fellow is drawn in black ballpoint, blue ballpoint, and white gouache on an original 1941 stamped envelope.
